Daisy Chainsaw
Contrived but fun pop punk outfit whose sudden appearance brightened up the independent scene of the early '90s, though their subsequent disappearance was just as sudden. Led by fragile singer Katie Jane Garside, the band also comprised Richard Adams (bass), Vince Johnson (drums) and Crispin Grey (guitar). They debuted with the LOVESICKPLEASURE EP, which spiralled in to the UK Top 30, aided by the highly colourful video for lead track Love Your Money. Radio 1 had picked up on the song's frenetic pace, and the indie media were similarly impressed by Garside's ‘Victorian chimney sweep’ image, barefooted with torn dresses and covered in dirt. Allegations of sexual and psychological abuse suggested by one interview were later vehemently denied, but there is little doubt that the band's presentation was disturbingly resonant of the child as victim. The success of the EP encouraged them to sign with larger independent One Little Indian Records, despite tantalizing offers from the majors. However, their record company must have soon learned to regret their enthusiasm. Shortly after a hit and miss debut album produced by Ken Thomas (although there were strong tracks in Lonely Ugly Brutal World and Use Me Use Me), Garside announced her departure. The band attempted to soldier on but to no interest whatsoever.
