Daf
This German band specialized in minimalist electro-dance music. The initials stood for Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft and the line-up comprised Robert Gorl (drums/synthesizer), W. Spelmans (guitar), C. Hass (saxophone/synthesizer/bass) and Gabi Delgado-Lopez (vocals). Their first UK album was released on the Mute label in 1980, the title, DIE KLEINEN UND DIE BOSEN, is translated as The Small And The Evil. Recorded in London, the album was uneven and was generally considered as unrepresentative, dominated by ‘songs’ whose heritage combined PINK FLAG era Wire and Can influences. Afterwards Gorl and Delgado-Lopez continued as a duo. They recorded three albums for Virgin in an 18-month period. These comprised a mixture of Teutonic fantasy, love songs, and social statements. Delgado-Lopez's refusal to sing in English, condemned them to a minority international market. Contrary to their dour image, there is much to admire in the exemplary pop of singles such as Verlieb Dich In Mich.
