Chris Darrow
b. 1944, South Falls, Dakota, USA. A founder member of the fabled Kaleidoscope, this versatile multi-instrumentalist left the group in 1968 to join the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The following year Darrow helped form the Corvettes, an under-rated country-rock group who later backed Linda Ronstadt on a tour to promote her HAND SEWN album. Chris then began a solo career with ARTIST PROOF, and also found employment as a studio musician. He contributed to releases by John Stewart, John Fahey and others as well as appearing on several Tamla/ Motownsessions. A second album, CHRIS DARROW, continued his eclectic nature and featured cameos by Dolly Collins and Alan Stivell, while an equally crafted third, UNDER MY OWN DISGUISE, followed in 1974.
Darrow's subsequent profile has been more low key. He was involved in the brief Kaleidoscope reunion (1976), which in turn led to the formation of another short-term group, Rank Strangers, whose album appeared the following year. Having helped launch the career of guitarist Toulouse Engelheart, Darrow then completed another solo release, FRETLESS. By preferring to work in a small-scale circuit, this exceptional player has retained an integrity at the expense of the wider recognition his talent deserves.
