Bobby Digital
b. Robert Dixon, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Dixon was christened Digital because his arrival at King Jammys coincided with the rise of Steely And Clevie's computerised rhythm tracks in 1985. He quickly began to learn dub-cutting, voicing and mixing under Jammy's tuition; fulfilling a line of descendency that goes back to the late dub pioneer, King Tubby. Soon he was to play a pivotal role in the running of the studio, enhancing the careers of artists such as Cocoa Tea, Shabba Ranks, Chaka Demus, Admiral Bailey, Sanchez, Pinchers and many more. When he left in 1988 to form Heatwave sound system and build his own studio, all those artists voiced for the new Digital B label. Hits for Shabba included Wicked Inna Bed and Gal Yuh Good, which led to the JUST REALITY album in 1990. He, Ninjaman and Admiral Tibet joined forces for Serious Time, and by 1991 he had attracted new talent like Cobra (Tek Him), Tony Rebel, Penny Irie and Shaka Shamba (Reggae Fight), as well as established names such as Gregory Isaacs, Johnny Osbourne and Cornell Campbell. Whether cutting hardcore rhythms or recreating classics from the past, the quality of his productions reaped equal success throughout that year; including albums by Pinchers, Sanchez and Admiral Tibet, various ‘version’ sets and Half Pint's Substitute Lover.
1992 found Garnett Silk in the studio, recording his debut album and several hit singles which led to a major deal with Atlantic. By this time Digital was producing tracks for the international market; Shabba, Buju Banton, Cobra and Tiger among them. By the end of 1993 he had released a staggering volume of music, most of it exceptional. There were albums from Glen Ricks and Leroy Smart, some fine performances by Gregory Isaacs (Easy), Cocoa Tea, Red Dragon, Sugar Minott, Josey Wales and Lt. Stitchie, all of whom refreshed their careers accordingly. Mafia & Fluxy, Sly And Robbie and Danny Browne also created new, exciting rhythms like Mad Dog and Top Ten, which a plethora of younger artists like Terror Fabulous, Daddy Screw, Roundhead, Jigsy King and Saaba Tooth seized upon with rapid results. As 1994 opened he was cutting rhythms specifically to reintroduce Shabba to his dancehall audience. With his credentials as a fellow ghetto youth made good, an extensive array of gifted artists and a burgeoning reputation with a wider audience after his work with international acts, Bobby Digital is well situated to stay a leading producer well into the '90s.
