Culture Beat
Euro-dance sensations who were created by Torsten Fenslau (b. c.1964, Germany, d. November 1993, Darmstadt, Germany) in 1989 by putting together the more visual duo of Jay Supreme and Tania Evans. Fenslau had begun his career DJing at the Dorian Gray club at Frankfurt Airport, also working on Hessen State radio presenting the Club Night and Maxi-Mix shows. He subsequently moved into production, scoring a solo hit under the banner Out Of The Ordinary with Los Ninos Mix, although it did not find success outside of his native Germany. The same could hardly be said for Culture Beat, who quickly racked up huge overground dancefloor hits with No Deeper Meaning, Mr Vain and Got To Get It. In its wake Fenslau remixed for the Shamen (Coming On Strong) and released a solo progressive trance single, Come Into My Heart, as Abfahrt, and was behind Cheery Lips' Das Erdbbermund. Mr Vain sold over two million copies, but sadly Fenslau didn't live long enough to see his endeavours bear fruit. He was involved in a car crash in November 1993, dying from internal injuries when he reached hospital. The Culture Beat members informed the press of their intention to carry on in his absence, scoring another Top 10 hit with Anything in 1994. Alex Abraham became Fenslau's replacement as musical guru to Culture Beat, alongside long-term collaborators Peter Zweier and Nosie Katzman.
