Conscious Daughters
This rap duo consists of CMG and the Special One, from Oakland, California, USA, who both possess a powerful arsenal of vocal effects and characters, a combination that was ably backed on their debut by the production skills of Paris, for whose Scarface emporium they record. The Conscious Daughters had come across Paris in familiar fashion, thrusting a demo cassette into his hand, in the hope of him supporting their cause. Paris eventually came through with his promise to do something with the duo, albeit a long time after their initial meeting in 1991. When they did record, references to the treatment of women by gangsta rappers abounded, especially on tracks like Wife Of A Gangsta and What's A Girl To Do, which saw them namecheck the Fu-Schnickens, with whom they toured. The attitude appears to be a direct response to gangsta mythology and misogyny, particular the brand traded on by local rapper Too Short: ‘The bitch ho shit sells, but if that's all a man can talk about then we can do the same back.’
