Come
Formed in 1991, this highly-rated quartet centres on musicians already involved in New York's alternative music circuit. Singer/guitarist Thalia Zedek began her recording career with the Dangerous Birds and Uzi, before joining the influential Live Skull. Guitarist Chris Brokaw was formerly drummer in Codeine, while Sean O'Brien (bass) and Arthur Johnson (drums) were both ex-members of the Bar B Q Killers. Come made its debut in August 1991 with Car, a slow, menacing performance issued on the Sub Pop Records label. The equally atmospheric Fast Piss Blues succeeded it, backed by a languid version of the Rolling Stones' I Got The Blues. These served as the prefect introduction to ELEVEN: ELEVEN, rightly lauded as one of 1992's finest releases. The spirit of Patti Smith, Delta blues and the Stooges permeated this startling collection which highlighted Zedek's emotive voice and Brokow's dense guitar work. A period of seclusion ensued, but Come re-emerged with 1994's powerful second collection, which included further high calibre recordings in Finish Line and Let's Get Lost, as Come went on to support Throwing Muses on their 1995 British tour.
