Clive Chin
Record producer based at Randy's Studio 17, situated above the famous record shop of the same name in North Parade, Kingston. His first successful production came with the instrumental Java in 1971, featuring the melodica playing of his old school friend, Augustus Pablo. He went on to score several more local hits in 1972 with such as Dennis Brown's Cheater, its accompanying horns cut: Harvest In The East by Tommy McCook, and Junior Byles’ ‘King of Babylon’. He also produced Pablo's classic debut, THIS IS, in 1974, and two dub albums, one based around the Java track, which was mixed by resident Randy's engineer, Errol T Thompson. In 1975 he produced Carl Malcolm's Miss Wire Waist, a sizeable hit on the local market, in the wake of Malcolm's popular No Jestering for fellow producer, Leonard Santic Chin (no relation). Clive followed this with the ribald Fattie Bum Bum, whose inane catchy refrain appealed to the pop sensibilities of the British entrepreneur Jonathan King. He leased it to his UK label and hyped it into the British charts where it rose to number 8 in October of that year. Despite appearances to the contrary, this proved to be a less than satisfactory financial venture, and Chin concentrated once more on the grass roots audience with records like the stalking Guns In The Ghetto and Jah Woosh's Shine Eye Gal. Eventually he migrated to America, settling in the Bronx district of New York—to run the J & C Kitchen, serving Jamaican food to the local expatriate population. His family had established the VP record distribution company in the same locale. Over the last few years he has made tentative steps towards the music business again, but so far no new productions have been forthcoming.
