Alex Campbell
b. 1923 (or 1928), d. 1987. Campbell, nicknamed Big Daddy, and ‘Le Cowboy d'Ecosse’ in Europe, learned his trade by busking in London and Paris. Although he was not a ‘technical’ folk singer, he sang from experience and with feeling. He built up a strong European following, and consequently worked extensively in Scandinavia and Germany. One of his early songs, Been On The Road Too Long, is regarded by many as a classic. Campbell is believed to have recorded over 100 albums. GOODBYE BOOZE included the Eric Boglesong And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. 1976's NO REGRETS included the Tom Rush-composed title track and also Allan Taylor's Old Joe. Campbell was renowned for his drinking habits which contributed to his death in 1987. ALEX CAMPBELL AND HIS FRIENDS included Sandy Denny, Cliff Aungier and Johnny Silvo, while some of his other recordings were used for guitar tuition.
