The Black Velvet Band
This young, Irish folk and rock influenced band, led by the singer, songwriter and guitarist, Kieran Kennedy, released WHEN JUSTICE CAME, in 1989. A mixture of the traditional and contemporary, it was produced by Pete Anderson (who also worked with Michelle Shocked). The songs dealt with rural and arcane imagery, and contained reminders of Hothouse Flowers and the Waterboys. The subsequent extensive world tour was followed by a brief hiatus whilst Maria Doyle (vocals) was working on the film, THE COMMITMENTS. The second album, KING OF MYSELF, took a more personal, darker direction lyrically, with a stark, electric sound.
