The Bible
This Cambridge, UK band's debut single Gracelands, was a classy pop song issued in 1986, as was the follow-up Mahalia (a tribute to the gospel vocalist Mahalia Jackson). By the time Chrysalis had signed the Bible—Boo Hewerdine (vocals/guitar), Tony Shepherd (keyboards/percussion), Dave Larcombe (drums) and Leroy Lendor (bass)— the group already had an album's worth of well-crafted songs in WALKING THE GHOST BACK HOME. Chrysalis duly reissued Gracelands in early 1987, but it eluded the charts, and the band spent the year recording a second album. Released in May 1988, EUREKA shared the melodic quality of the Bible's debut, but neither single, Crystal Palace in April and Honey Be Good in September, made much impression. Desperate for the success they deserved, the band tried revamping Gracelands and when that failed, reissued Honey Be Good. A compilation release in late 1989, THE BEST OF THE BIBLE, signalled the end of the band's association with their label.
