Rebop Kwaku Baah
b. 1944, Lagos, Nigeria. Originally known as Remi Kabaka, this percussion maestro came to the UK in the '60s, and during the '60s and '70s gigged with most resident and many visiting African bands, while also providing authentic percussion arrangements as a session player for rock artists such as Steve Winwood, the Rolling Stones, Traffic and Ginger Baker. As Kwaku Baah, he recorded one remarkable album, TRANCE, for Island Records in the mid-'70s, using a group of traditional Moroccan musicians from the mystical Ganuoa sect. His recordings with Traffic are particularly noteworthy as their sparse arrangements allowed each musician great freedom and Rebop's sound was allowed to come to the fore.
