Jan Bradley
b. Addie Bradley, 6 July 1943, Byhalia, Mississippi, USA. Bradley is best known for the 1963 pop/R&B hit Mama Didn't Lie. She took singing lessons as a child and was discovered in 1961 by Don Talty, then manager of guitarist Phil Upchurch. Talty signed her to Chess Records and enlisted the songwriting talents of a young Curtis Mayfield, himself riding high at the time with the Impressions. Mayfield penned We Girls, a local hit in the Chicago area. In 1963 he returned with Mama Didn't Lie, an R&B dance track that reached number 14 on the pop charts. Bradley was unable to follow her one national hit with any others, and by the end of the '60s had quit show business. She was employed as a social worker in the late '80s, while her single contribution to pop music was still popular on US radio stations that played vintage rock 'n roll.
