Bump
Bump is an umbrella name for the activities of UK DJ Mark Auerbach and studio engineer Steve Travell. The two initially met at the 1991 New Music Seminar, where they were overheard congratulating each other on their work. They swapped addresses before returning to their ‘day’ jobs—Mark DJing with the Slam boys and working with Adamski, while Steve launched his group, the Orange. When that venture ground to a halt he got back in touch with Mark. Under their joint auspices they recorded I'm Rushin'. Convinced they had found the perfect meter, they sent out promo copies to prominent DJs, pressed on their own Good Boy Records. Sampling a vocal line from Sir James' Special, it saw a stock release on the Strictly Rhythm imprint. In the wake of its success they were invited to provide remixes, notably of David D'or's Yad Anougah, also working with Sue Chaloner, Supereal, Soundsource and the Reese Project. In 1992 they noted: ‘We're reaching the threshold where we can be remixers for the rest of our lives if we want to.’ However, as Auerbach added, there were drawbacks: ‘There's a lot of pressure to turn shit into gems.’ Their style has been desribed as progressive house, though this is not a bracket they themselves are happy with.
