Brass Monkey
This short-lived group, formed in 1981, comprised John Kirkpatrick (anglo-concertina, melodeon, accordion, vocals), Roger Williams (b. 30 July 1954, Cottingham, Yorkshire, England; trombone), Howard Evans (b. 29 February 1944, Chard, Somerset, England; trumpet, flugelhorn), Martin Brinsford (b. 17 August 1944, Gloucester, England; saxophone, mouth organ, percussion) and Martin Carthy(guitar, mandolin, vocals). Brinsford had earlier been a member of the Old Swan Band. Meanwhile, another band, Home Service, still included Evans and Williams as members. Williams was replaced in 1984 by Richard Cheetham (b. 29 January 1957, Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester, England; trombone). The group provided something of an eyebrow-raiser when their combination of traditional folk instruments were played alongside brass instruments. The combination of folk stalwarts Carthy and Kirkpatrick and classically-trained brass musicians produced the highly acclaimed BRASS MONKEY. The group appeared on the Loudon Wainwrightrelease MORE LOVE SONGS in 1986, but with the various members of the band having so many other commitments, they went their separate ways the following year.
