Glenn Yarbrough
b. 12 January 1930, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Yarbrough
was best known as lead vocalist of the '60s folk group the
Limeliters. He also recorded numerous albums and scored a Top 20
single under his own name in 1965. Yarbrough sang in church as a
child and became a folk singer in the mid-50s. He was discovered
in Chicago and performed on the national folk circuit, eventually
starting his own coffeehouse, the Limelite, in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, with partner Alex Hassilev. Along with Lou Gottlieb,
the two formed the Limeliters, who became very successful in the
early '60s, placing 10 albums on the US top charts between 1961
and 1964. Yarbrough left the Limeliters in 1964 and recorded the
theme song from the film BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL, which reached
US number 12 in 1965. Yarbrough eventually had 10 chart solo
albums by the end of the '60s but only one further chart single.
On three of his albums, THE LONELY THINGS, Each of Us and GLENN
YARBROUGH SINGS THE ROD MCKUEN SONGBOOK, the poet Rod McKuen
wrote the lyrics. Yarbrough continued to record throughout the '70s
and '80s, without repeating his commercial success of the '60s.
In the late '80s Yarbrough re-formed the Limeliters with new
members.
